TGSRC's Learn to Row Programme
Whether you're a complete novice or have some experience, this programme is open to all students who will be at Takapuna Grammar in 2024, who are eager to dive into the exciting world of rowing.
Our Learn to Row programme kick starts on Sunday 13 August with an open session for you to come along and see what rowing is all about. You'll get a chance to meet our experienced coaching staff, talk to current rowers, and witness the incredible atmosphere at our training grounds at Bayswater Marina. The session will move through land and on water experiences, and while that’s happening, parents will have some time to hear from our committee and head coach about how the club works, what’s involved and the benefits of being part of the wonderful sport of rowing.
There will then be three further sessions on Sunday 20 August, Sunday 3 September, and Sunday 10 September, with some optional land training sessions on a weekday afternoon. These sessions will provide a solid foundation in rowing techniques, fitness training, and team dynamics. Our skilled coaches will be there every step of the way, guiding and supporting you as you discover the joy of rowing. We suggest you attend all four Sunday sessions if possible.
Rowing is a sport that offers a balance of fitness and enjoyment. When you're out on the water, rowing with your team, you can't help but have a great time. Rowing allows you to challenge yourself physically while also enjoying the company of your teammates. Whether you prefer a more casual approach or are interested in competing, there's a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that comes every time you’re on the water.
To those interested in coxing, our new coach, Sam, has extensive experience coaching coxswains. Getting involved as a coxswain gives you a comprehensive understanding of rowing techniques, boat dynamics, and the physical demands of rowers. This firsthand experience enhances your ability to provide effective instructions, steer the boat, and keep the team motivated during training and races. Sam's mentorship will help you develop leadership skills, including effective communication and motivating a team.
Registrations for the season will close on Sunday 17 September, ahead of the Spring Camp to be held at Karapiro 1-4 October (during the school holidays).
Register your interest now if you are interested in the LTR programme. We will be in touch closer to the time of the LTR programme commencement to confirm your interest, and to request you to complete full registration information, including providing us with information that may be relevant to us in ensuring your child’s safety during their LTR experience.
Please take a look around our website. You will find loads of information about training (including example training schedules), camps, regattas, and fees. We hope it helps answer many of your questions.
